The simple way to search Murphy’s
Register is by last name.
Where no records are found for a particular last name,
the message “No matches found” will appear on screen.
Where records are identified for the last name searched,
a list of possible matches will appear from which you
may be able to identify the one of choice. Each match
details rank, initials, last name and unit served, and
by clicking on the magnifying glass, any further details
known will be provided in an individual record. From
that point it will be possible to purchase the source of
the photograph and where Harpers retains the source
in-house and copyright permits, a copy of the photograph
identified. Click here for
details. For example, if you wish to identify a photograph of a
Private Skinner and you know he served in the Manchester
Regiment*, enter Skinner in the ‘Last name’
search box and click return. A list of possible matches
will appear from which you will be able to identify
individuals by further details, such as initials, unit
served, etc.
In some cases, you may wish to search for hyphenated
last names. If this is the case, please enter the last
name as you know it, including the hyphen, e.g. Scott-Deakin.
Hyphenated surnames will also appear in search results
for Scott or Deakin.
* One caveat of which you may need to be aware,
is that many individuals in the Great War served in more
than one regiment or even service. We have indexed each
photograph according to that noted in the source. Where
the source reveals more than one unit of service, we
have identified the last known during the war.
